Botero is hilarious. That is all. Nothing else is needed. All these attempts to decipher the meaning behind his "fat" ouevre are in the end all fruitless. While it seems promising to find sense in why he depicts his figures the way he does because of its stark dissent from our perception of figure, Botero himself explains simply:
"An artist is attracted to certain kinds of form without knowing why. You adopt a position intuitively; only later do you attempt to rationalize or even justify it"
So appreciate his style for what it is.
From my own experience, when I first saw Botero, I was confounded. I attempted my own search. Eventually, I came to the realization it was fruitless. All I needed was to appreciate the dominance and effectiveness of his style.
