ARTIST STATEMENT
I remember the world through faces. Each wrinkle, loose strand, and sly smile meld themselves with my mind. And from that mental sea of imagery – like Botticelli’s vision of Venus - are born the images which I create. My work, on the surface appears to simply be realistic depictions of people. But beyond that initial appearance, the works I’ve created also occupy a dual role as snapshots of my life and memory.
Now it would be disingenuous to say that each portrait I create originates solely from my mind’s vision. No – they are not a direct expression from my mind to my brush. Nor are they mindless copies of pre-existing images either. From my mind comes a simple idea – a blurred face and a feeling. And from this I seek to capture the face from life that matches this vision. The resulting images then work as a base for my paintings which are built upon through manipulation of color, texture, and figure.
