Started making the panel this week. I've glued and nailed it all together, but I will need to rout it and sand the edges next week.
I'm not sure what my next project will be, but I think I have solidly decided to transition into oils. I like acrylic, but from what I've researched oil seems to be the best option forward to really elevate my art. According to many, oil will be my best bet to further capture realism in my work and since I'm working in portraiture that sounds like a good plan.
Weigh Me DownThe thing that I love about Arman is his versatility. His whole body of work spans the multiple realms of art with each forays ending in success. However, I would like to dedicate this post on his most striking works, his accumulations. Stemming from Dada and Pop Art influences, these works emphasize the objects not only through their numbers, but how each individual object acts within the whole that forms the accumulation. Everyone of his works produces such distinct textures and forms that I really love.
Although Arman's work largely differs from my body of work - I'm 2D, he's 3D - the textures and weight that his pieces contain find a place in my work. I would like to incorporate some of his ideas into my pieces in order to ground my pieces with weights. As I see it, my pieces need that texture, that heaviness to contrast with the lightness that I tend to depict. How I incorporate that heaviness I desire however will be hard to accomplish, but it has gotten me started thinking of applying sculptural elements on to canvas. Learn More: Arman I literally spent 7 hours straight painting on Saturday. I didn't eat or do anything other than going to the bathroom during that span. But honestly, I loved it. Just pushing myself to continually work on the painting really brought the painting to life. Technically, it's probably my soundest piece. I just now need to resolve the background. I'm thinking joint compound, I love it's texture. Making this painting was seriously more gratifying than the last one. It was a labor of love. It also spun new ideas for my next projects. I'm chock full of ideas now. Bad thing though, is that I haven't really started my home project yet. Need to get on that, but overall I had a very productive weekend.
So I finished the painting. Not happy. I wanted ugly, but instead I just got sad making it. I think I need to rethink how I'm gonna approach uglyness. On the other hand, I'm starting a new project inspired by this one. It's going well so far and I'm actually enjoying making it. It's not ugly, but I don't mind at this point. You have to start somewhere with painting. This could be my home project, but I still really like the idea I had previously. Who knows what I'll do. We'll just have to see.
So I literally hate painting right now. I barely mix the colors up on a palette, and just prefer direct painting overall. On the flip-side I think I finally know what I'm doing. Finally. It'll take a long time tho to get it finished. The weekend it is then.
He's Andy Warhol meets Willem De KoonigMeet Leroy Neiman. While he's built quite a reputation, his name doesn't quite appear with those of Andy Warhol or Willem De Koonig, both leaders of popular artistic movements, Pop Art and Abstract Expressionism respectively. What seems to limit Neiman was his penchant to sell out to magazines - meaning he was successful financially, but adversely affected his artistic stock. Despite this, I think it's time to raise awareness on this guy. He may not have led a popular art movement in his life, but his characteristic mark and his blending of Pop Art and Abstract Expressionist influences make him quite a unique figure. Personally, I find his mark very interesting and inspiring. I'm drawn most towards his use of vivid colors particularly the neon colors. His eye for color is something I'd like to see in my own work. I'm not quite a fan with the loose brush strokes at times. When they work, they work, but when they don't, it's very noticeable. Learn More: LeRoy Neiman Selected Works:
I literally have no clue what I'm doing right now with my project. Some parts look good, and other suck so much. I literally have no idea. The face looked good when I started, then i messed it up. I'm still thinking I'll figure it out, but who knows what happens.
Why were we working on our artists statements when we could have been working?? I mean I get the purpose of making them, but I literally could have done a lot more in that period than read artist statements. Whatever, really though. I did start taking pictures for my new piece with Andrea. The picture above is probably what I'm gonna go for in terms of composition. I'm still struggling with how to make it ugly though, but whatever I'll figure it out.
